Now Listening : Ibeyi

Ibeyi is a French/Cuban musical duo consisting of twin sisters, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz. In 2013 they signed to the record label, XL Recordings.

He sings in English and the language of Yoruba, a West African language that travelled to Cuba via slavery in the 1700s.

The twins’ father was the famed Cuban percussionist, Anga Diaz, who as a member of Buena Vista Social Club played with Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez and Maximo Francisco Repilado Munoz aka Company Segundo. On his death, the twins, then age 11 years old, learned to play his signature instrument the [Cajón], and studied the folks songs of Yoruba. Now aged 19, they have started recording their debut album.

Ibeyi is pronounced ee-bey-ee. In Yoruba, Ibeji translates as “twins”
